Robotics Sector Explorer
From industrial arms to humanoids — a structured breakdown of the global robotics ecosystem with investment characteristics, key players, competitive moats, and India's emerging opportunity across each segment.
Industrial Robots & Cobots
Articulated Arms, Welding, Assembly & Collaborative Robots
Traditional industrial robots (6-axis arms, SCARA, delta robots) for welding, painting, assembly, and material handling — plus the newer collaborative robots (cobots) that work safely alongside humans without safety cages. Cobots are the fast-growth segment: the cobot market is growing at 27% CAGR and projected to reach $7B by 2030. Automotive and electronics are the dominant verticals.
Humanoid Robots
Bipedal, Dexterous, AI-Driven General-Purpose Robots
Bipedal robots with human-like form designed to work in human environments — warehouses, factories, homes. Tesla Optimus, Figure AI, Agility Robotics' Digit, Boston Dynamics Atlas, and China's Unitree (R1 at $5,900) are the frontrunners. BMW, GXO, and Spanx are piloting humanoids in 2025. Most deployments are still pilot-scale — but the pace of progress in 2025 has been extraordinary.
Warehouse & Logistics Robots
AMRs, AGVs, Sorting, Picking & Fulfilment Automation
Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs) and Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) that move goods in warehouses; robotic picking arms; sorting systems for e-commerce fulfilment; and fleet orchestration software. Amazon's 750,000+ robots have proven the model. E-commerce growth is the structural tailwind. Addverb and GreyOrange are India's top players with global footprints.
Surgical & Medical Robots
Robotic Surgery, Rehabilitation & Hospital Automation
Robotic systems for minimally invasive surgery (laparoscopic, orthopaedic, cardiac), patient rehabilitation (exoskeleton-based therapy), hospital logistics (medicine delivery robots), and diagnostics automation. Intuitive Surgical's Da Vinci system has 10,000+ installations globally. India's SS Innovations has built the SSI Mantra — India's first indigenous modular surgical robot — as a cost-effective alternative for emerging markets.
Agricultural Robots
Harvesting, Spraying, Seeding & Precision Farming Automation
Robots that plant, spray, harvest, and monitor crops — from autonomous tractors to drone sprayers to strawberry-picking robots. Labour shortage in agriculture (especially in developed markets) is the primary driver. In India, drones for pesticide spraying (iDrones, Garuda Aerospace) are the most commercially mature agricultural robotics application.
Construction & Infrastructure Robots
Bricklaying, Inspection, Demolition & Site Automation
Robots for dangerous or repetitive construction tasks — bricklaying (Fastbrick's Hadrian X), concrete pouring, rebar tying, drywall installation (Canvas), tunnel boring assistance, and building inspection using drones and crawlers. India's massive infrastructure build programme (PM Gati Shakti, Smart Cities, Housing for All) is a potential giant market once these robots prove out.
Defence & Security Robots
UGVs, Bomb Disposal, Perimeter Security & Soldier Augmentation
Unmanned Ground Vehicles (UGVs) for IED disposal, battlefield logistics, perimeter patrol, and minesweeping. Exoskeletons for soldier load-bearing and rehabilitation. Sentry robots for border surveillance. India's contested borders and internal security requirements make this a high-priority segment. The overlap with drones (covered in the Defence thesis) is significant.
Service & Social Robots
Hospitality, Retail, Cleaning, Elder Care & Companion Robots
Robots that serve customers, clean floors, deliver food and medicine in hospitals, provide companionship to elderly, and interact with the public. iRobot Roomba defined consumer cleaning robots. Miko (India) builds AI companion robots for children, sold in 140+ countries. Hospital delivery robots (Aethon, Savioke) are scaling rapidly post-COVID.
Inspection & Maintenance Robots
Pipeline, Power Grid, Aviation & Underwater Inspection
Robots that inspect and maintain hazardous or hard-to-access assets — oil & gas pipelines, power transmission lines, aircraft fuselages, ship hulls, wind turbines, and underwater structures. These replace dangerous manual inspections and catch faults before costly failures. Sastra Robotics and Planys Technologies are India's standout players.
Exoskeletons & Wearable Robotics
Industrial Load-Assist, Rehabilitation & Soldier Augmentation
Wearable robotic suits that augment human strength (industrial: reduce injury in assembly and logistics workers) or restore mobility (medical: stroke rehabilitation, spinal injury). Sarcos' Guardian XO lifts 90 kg as if it were 1 kg. Genrobotics (India) is developing rehabilitation exoskeletons. The military is a major buyer — powered load-carrying exoskeletons for soldiers.
Robotics Enabling Technologies
AI/Vision, Actuators, Sensors, Simulation & ROS Middleware
The components and software that make all robots work — machine vision systems, force-torque sensors, harmonic drive actuators, LiDAR, NVIDIA Jetson AI compute, ROS (Robot Operating System) middleware, and digital twin simulation platforms. This is the 'picks and shovels' layer of robotics. CynLr (India) is building robotic visual object intelligence — a global-class enabling tech from India.
