India Space Economy Explorer
From launch vehicles to space situational awareness — a structured breakdown of India's emerging space economy with investment characteristics, key startups, policy context, and competitive moats.
Launch Vehicles
Small-Lift, Medium-Lift & Orbital Access
Private companies building rockets to put satellites into orbit. India's ISRO pioneered PSLV and LVM3, but the Indian Space Policy 2023 has now opened orbital launch to private players. Skyroot Aerospace and Agnikul Cosmos are India's two leading private launch vehicle companies — both have achieved historic firsts.
Satellite Manufacturing
Small Sats, Buses, Constellations & Sub-systems
Designing and building the actual satellites — from cubesats to larger Earth observation platforms. India has ISRO's legendary manufacturing capability but private satellite manufacturing is nascent. Dhruva Space, Kawa Space, and the Pixxel consortium are frontrunners. IN-SPACe's 'Satellite Bus as a Service' (SBaaS) launched in 2025 enables payload-first innovation.
Earth Observation
Optical, SAR, Hyperspectral Imaging & Analytics
Satellites that image the Earth for agriculture, urban planning, disaster management, defence, climate monitoring, and infrastructure. India's Pixxel is building the world's most capable hyperspectral satellite constellation. GalaxEye offers all-weather multi-sensor imaging. IN-SPACe's Earth Observation Preparatory Programme (EOPP) awarded ₹1,200 Cr to Pixxel-led consortium in 2025 for a 12-satellite network.
Satellite Communications
Broadband, IoT, Direct-to-Device & LEO Satcom
Using satellites to provide broadband internet (especially to rural/remote India), IoT connectivity, maritime and aviation comms, and eventually direct-to-smartphone coverage. Starlink is the global leader; India's Jio, OneWeb/Eutelsat (Bharti), and ISRO's GSAT/CMS sats address this. Astrome Technologies is building indigenously.
Space-based Defence & Intelligence
Spy Sats, SIGINT, Dual-Use EO & Space Situational Awareness
Military satellites for reconnaissance (spy sats), signals intelligence (SIGINT), communications (SATCOM for troops), and missile warning. India's DRDO and ISRO run classified military satellite programs. Dual-use EO startups (Pixxel, GalaxEye, PierSight) increasingly serve defence customers. India's contested borders with China and Pakistan make this a top strategic priority.
Space Situational Awareness
Debris Tracking, Collision Avoidance & Space Traffic
Tracking the ~35,000+ pieces of debris and thousands of active satellites orbiting Earth to prevent collisions. As Leo constellations multiply, space traffic management becomes existential. Digantara is India's standout player — it deployed SCOT (Space Camera for Object Tracking) in January 2025, the first commercial in-orbit surveillance satellite.
Space Data, Analytics & AI
Geospatial Intelligence, Agritech, Climate & Urban AI
Companies that take raw satellite data and convert it into actionable insights — for agriculture (crop health, yield prediction), finance (commodity signals), insurance, urban planning, disaster response, and climate monitoring. The 'downstream' of the space value chain. SatSure and Satsense are India's most mature players.
Satellite Navigation (NavIC)
India's Indigenous GPS — Receivers, Chips & Services
NavIC (Navigation with Indian Constellation) is India's own GPS system — 7 satellites covering India and 1,500 km surroundings. Government mandates NavIC in all smartphones sold in India (from 2023), emergency beacons, fishing boats, and public transport. The chip and receiver ecosystem is still being built — a large domestic opportunity.
Space Propulsion & Components
Electric Thrusters, Cryogenic Engines & Sub-systems
The engines and thrusters that move satellites — from large cryogenic launch vehicle engines to tiny electric ion thrusters that keep cubesats in orbit. Bellatrix Aerospace makes green propulsion and electric thrusters. MTAR Technologies (listed) makes critical cryogenic rocket components for ISRO. This is the 'picks and shovels' layer of the space stack.
Ground Stations & Space Infrastructure
Ground Networks, Launch Pads, Testing & TT&C
The terrestrial infrastructure that supports space missions — ground stations for telemetry and control (TT&C), launch pads, antenna networks, testing facilities, and mission operations centres. Dhruva Space operates ground stations. Agnikul built India's first private launch pad (Dhanush, at Sriharikota). SpaceFields and others are developing private launch facilities.
